Preventing ill health in childhood

On October 2013, the Chief Medical Officer, Dame Sally Davies, published her annual report, Our Children Deserve Better (Department of Health (DH), 2013a), on the health of the nation's children based on data collected throughout 2012. This report is a response to the challenges to the health and wellbeing of the nations children and young people. It asks whether the health service is giving them a good start in life and building their resilience to future disease. The assertion that the wealth of a nation should be invested in the health of its children is not new, but there are several reasons why this imperative needs to become a reality.
