One hundred and eighty Hubbard broiler chickens, 3 days old, were used in a study investigating the economics of broiler rearing when given isoenergetic (ME 2900 kcal/kg) and isonitrogenous (23% CP) diets containing varying levels of fish meal (FM 5.92-19.23%). Body weight was lowest in those fed on 5.92% FM and highest in those fed on 19.23% FM. Feed intake was highest in those fed on 19.23% FM (P<0.05). Feed costs were related to feed intake and levels of inclusion of FM in the diet; cost was higher in groups offered 19.23% FM and lowest in those offered 5.92% FM. However, total cost of production and feed + chick cost were higher in the group assigned 19.23% FM. The return from the sale of broilers was higher (P<0.05) in groups fed on 19.23% FMbut profit over feed cost, feed plus chick cost and net profit were higher (P<0.05) in those assigned the 17.75% FM diet containing 6% fish meal protein (FMP). It is concluded that broiler diets formulated using 17.75% FM (supplying 6% FMP) along with 35.3% groundnut cake as vegetable protein supplement are economical during winter.
