Ecology and population dynamics of phytoplankton in brackishwater traditional shrimp culture pond, north east coast of India

The dynamics of phytoplankton population in relation to that of physicochemical characteristics of water in a typical brackishwater pond used for shrimpculture in a traditional manner was studied for a period of two cropping years. It was situated innorthern part of Ganjam district in Orissa, north east coast of India. Twenty genera of phytoplankton belonging to four families such as Cyanophycease, Bacillariophyceae, Dinophyceae and Chlorophyceae were recorded. A significant difference was observedin population of phytoplankton among different families (P <= 0.05) as well as their occurrence during different months (P <= 0.01).
