This series has been exploring the various key relationships developed by the professional nurse. Despite the central role of relationships in all types of nursing, the emphasis on this during initial nurse education and continuing professional development is surprisingly limited. While assessment, it is relatively easy to learn skills such as drug administration, record keeping and patient assessment, it is much more difficult to learn and develop the foundation skills oflistening, empathy, caring, and empowerment. Relationship skills can easily be eroded by excessive workloads and failure to take care of ourselves.
