The lifetime and availability of grinding rollers is heavily dependent on the lifetime of the bearings. And, from experience across the industry, the bearing lifetime is mostly reduced due to dirt, water and other contamination getting past the seal into the bearings. In early designs of vertical grinding mills, and still used in many today, the seals were of the mechanical seal variety where the sealing effect is created by two mechanisms in the same seal design: a fixed static seal, and a rotating seal created by two surfaces sliding against each other.
