A number of surveys recently carried out, exploring how general practice nurses (GPNs) are employed, have revealed much information that should make those of us who are obsessed with patient care, concerned. We should be concerned because a significant number of nurses employed in general practice report that it is not unusual for them to be asked by their employers to carry our nursing activities which they feel incompetent to perform.The General Medical Services (GMS) contract began its journey of implementation in April 2004 and since that time large amounts of cash have been distributed throughout the United Kingdom's (UK) general practices. The Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOP) has cost the government far more money than the original financial estimate agreed by the treasury.
