The breeding goals for white egg and brown egg layers have become very similar. To find out more about the genetics of modern table egg stock and what can be done to optimise productivity we recently visited Lohmann in Germany and met their table eggteam. Basically, any egg producer is now looking for similar things in brown and white egg layers. First, the bird must be fit and healthy at breeder and commercial level. Then the bird must produce a lot of egg mass — 20kg or more — in a single laying cycle, with a high percentage of 'saleable' eggs.
