A new wastewater combination contains sieve filter and SBR called SBRSF was built for treating real wastewater. Filtration rate was not affected by initial hydraulic pressure range of (0.5-2.5) m-H_2O. Sludge cake layer was formed on sieve surface within 5 min. Final effluent contained less than 1 mg/L of SS after only 10 minutes. Higher pollutant removal efficiency of 86.2% and 99% for TN and NH_4, respectively, was achieved by SBRSF under the cut-off aeration conditions. As a final engineering observation, the proposed system is regarded as an effective combination to improve the performance of SBR and cancelled sedimentation period. Also, this combination can minimize the excess sludge production. The performance of sieve filter (filter period and mixed liquor) was affected significantly by the saccharide and protein contents in the exocellular polymer of the extracted activated sludge. The period of the effluent withdrawal was influenced by the contents of the extracellular polymers in the reactor, although filtration was commonly conducted within 90 min. The content of saccharides in the extracellular polymers extracted from the sludge decreased with the increase of pH while the protein content did not change significantly.
