The present study examines the stop holes technique on the crack growth emanating from the notch, which is initially overloaded prior to be cycled under constant amplitude load. The result of the study reveals that the technique can arrest the crack growth emanating from the notch after being overloaded if the stress ratio of the subsequent constant amplitude load is zero. However, the crack growth is accelerated, and the fatigue life is shortened by the overload followed by the constant amplitude load with stress ratio -1.5. The deceleration or acceleration of the crack growth depends on residual stress state developing in the front of the notch and the holes following the overload.
