The mineral industry is processing many millions of tonnes of rock to extract a small fraction of useful product. The main objective in processing plant operations is the lowest mineral recovery cost. This can be achieved to a great extent through wise selection of materials for minimizing the consumption of material of construction of processing plant equipment components. The loss of material mainly occur in the form of wear. Wear of metallic components is insidious and universal in occurrence. It is a function of alloy composition, environment, component design, metallurgy, temperature and host of other factors. The need for more careful selection of suitable, including special engineering materials is becoming justified in view of increased cost per ton of ore treatment. The paper outlines the use of metals and materials for the critical components of some important mineral processing plant equipment with the justification of their use. However final decision is to be taken by the customer/manufacturer/user based on their knowledge and experience in selecting proper type of material of the equipment components.
