Selection of fuels for automobiles is important for sustainable development of the Japanese industry as well as global environment. This article deals with issues concerning the selection of fuels for automobiles. We have identified six major issues to explore the appropriate future fuels. These are technology and safety investigation, assessment of "Well to Wheel" efficiency, identification of learning curve for producing novel automobiles, measurement of consumers' preference for new fuels, static and dynamic evaluation through energy systems model, and assessment of risks accompanying investment in novel fuels. We describe comprehensive measures to evaluate the above issues with our recent research results.
