When You Are in the midst of a revolution it is extremely difficult to find your bearings, and if you do, to know whether to trust them. And that is where we are in the automotive industry right now. While the merger between Daimler-Benz and Chrysler is acknowledged as being the seminal event it was, the equivalent to 5.9 on the Richter scale, it was but the result of a series of events and assumptions that have engrossed the motor industry for the last few years. Despite the harsh recession at the start of the decade, the 1990s have been kind to the motor industry. There was a downturn for demand in vehicles, especially in Western Europe and North America, but it was compensated for by what was happening in other parts of the world.
