Scabies (brain-itch) infestation in pigs and its treatment

Scabies also referred to as Sarcoptic mange is an intense pruritic contagious condition with a potential zoonotic significance (Chandy et al., 2000). This ectoparasitic infestation is caused primarily by epidural mite Sarcoptic scabiei. The mites live within the skin for at least a part of their life cycle causing severe cutaneous effects and reduced production of swine (Davis, 1995). Sarcoptic mange occurs in all species of animals and is an important disease of cattle, camel, sheep and pigs (Radostits et al., 1994). The present study reports sarcoptic mange in Middle White Yorkshire pigs and its treatment. Five Middle White Yorkshire pigs aging between one and half to two years maintained in the piggery unit of the College, with the history of presence of small red papules and general erythema of the skin were presented for the treatment. The lesions were found to be spread all over the body predominantly over the trunk, face, snout, ears and back region.
