HAEMATOLOGICAL, SERUM TESTOSTERONE AND POTASSIUM CHANGES IN CAUDECTOMISED AND CASTRATED CAPTIVE MALE SPOTTED DEER (AXIS AXIS)

18 healthy male captive spotted (Chital) deer (Axis axis) of 21/2-3 years of age, weighing 40-55 kgs were randomly divided into III groups (n=6) withholding feed for 24 hours and water for 12 hours. The animals were darted with the mixture of Xylazinehydrochloride @ 1.5 mg/kg b.wt. (Xylazine-Indian Immunological, India) and Ketamine hydrochloride @ 5 mg/kg b.wt. (Ketamine-Themis, India) intramuscularly. In the animals of group I (no castration/caudectomy was performed) hence served as control. In group II castration using Baby Burdizo method, while in group III bilateral caudectomy was done, haemoglobin (gm/%), packed cell volume (PCV), total leucocytes count (TLC), total erythrocyte count (TEC) and differential leucocytic count (DLC) was done n day 0, 30th and 60th as per standard method. Serum potassium and serum testosterone was estimated by Radio Immuno Assay on day 0, 30th and 60th in normal as well as castrated/caudectomised animals. The data for serum testosterone was statistically analyzed by two way ANOVA.
