Polyneuritis in a Black Bengal goat

Deficiency of thiamin (Vitamin-B1) which is responsible for causing polyneuritis in animals and stargazing in birds is of importance only in swine and poultry (Sastry, 1983)and not in cattle and sheep (Blood et al, 1985). Polyneuritis in caprine species has not been reported so far. Present communication reports such a rare incidence in goat. A lactating Black Bengal doe was presented in the Veterinary Dispensary. Ranibandh, Bankura with the main complaint of inability of movement and stiffed neck with head holding high, slightly turned towards left. Clinical examination revealed stiffness of the limbs and neck with head retraction. Both fore and hind quarters revealed normal tone and reflexes. Temperature, pulse and respiration were within the normal range. Head was pointed straight up in a typical stargazing attitude similar to birds which is a rare incidence in caprine and it was tentatively diagnosed to be a case of polyneuritis.
