The primary source of information relied upon for combustion investigation has for long been the analysis of combustion pressure diagrams. This does, however, not give much information on localised events, which determine reliability, potential damage, fuel efficiency and harmful gaseous emission levels. Foremost among these only partly-mastered problem areas are onset of ignition, flame kernel development, flame growth in the initial combustion, phase, flame expansion into the combustion chamber, the high pressure combustion phase and the termination of combustion. All these are amenable to a new research tool from AVL which operates through the cylinder head gasket, reports Marcus Jacobson.
