Leukaemia near power lines

The study by Lowenthal et al. examined the association between residential proximity to high-voltage electricity transmission lines and the development of lymphoprolifer-ative and myeloproliferative disorders (LPD/MPD) in Tasmania.1A noteworthy feature of the report is the fact that reanalyses of a subgroup, comprising patients and controls who had never resided outside Tasmania, consistently showed a stronger association with power line proximity than was found for the study group as a whole, including persons with some non-Tasmanian residential history. This finding was not repeated, however, in respect of occupational exposure in 'high-risk' jobs.
