IN THE MID 90s, the sales staff at a Midwestern cord company noticed an unexpected surge in the sales of one particular product. The company specialized in a variety of cloth and metallized products, but it was tinned copper braiding for cable assemblies that more and more customers were requesting. Intriguingly, the explanation for this upswing lay half a world away. The European Community had adopted its EMC Directive-one of the world's most stringent standards on EMC compliance. No electrical or electronic device could be imported into the European Community without complying with the emissions and immunity standards spelled out in this document. Products that underwent successful testing and that met the standards received the coveted "CE" (Conformite Europeen) mark and could be sold in Europe.
