For the pu rpose of alleviating the current shortage of good quality clay as used in porcelains, a new porcelain body has been developed with reduced clay content and increased silica content. From a range of compositions studied, an optimum composition was found to be [%] silica stone:feldspar:clay = 60:20:20. This body exhibited not only better whiteness and better translucency (compared to conventional porcelain bodies) but also similar mechanical strength to that of conventional bodies. Lime glaze and lime barium giaze were also found to be applicable to this high silica body.
