Geithner, Wang Meet At G-20; Expert Expects Nothing New On Currency

U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner met this week with Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan at the G-20 summit in Los Cabos, Mexico, to discuss bilateral as well as multilateral economic issues, including the European debt crisis, the Treasury Department said in a statement. The two officials pledged to remain in close contact following their June 18 meeting, particularly "in light of the challenges facing the global economy," according to the Treasury statement, which was released the same day. Prior to the June 18-19 G-20 summit, experts at the Peterson Institute for International Economics speculated that the U.S. and China would likely discuss ways they could work together to support Europe in the midst of the crisis. Geithner in June 19 remarks at Los Cabos said the G-20 leaders' summit focused largely on the European crisis and the challenges to global economic growth in general, although he did not mention any joint U.S.-China efforts to support Europe. While stressing that "a solution to this crisis in Europe has got to be made in Europe," Geithner noted that other countries have a huge stake in the success of their efforts and will continue to do everything they can support to European countries.
