Imagine this scenario: Ford, Nissan, Volkswagen, Honda and Mazda announce that they have decided to divest completely their engine divisions and merge them into two independent engine companies. The aim of the two new companies, which combine the research and development and manufacturing centres of their parents, is to make more than six million each of the best quality engines a year up to seven per cent cheaper than their competitors and give an annual increase of three per cent in the market share.
