Parliament Rejects Commission Draft On GMO Import Opt-Out, Calls For New Proposal

The European Parliament Wednesday (Oct. 28) overwhelmingly rejected a commission proposal that would allow member states to ban the import of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) for reasons other than health and safety, and called on the commission to submit a new draft regulation. The parliament voted in favor of a recommendation to reject the proposal 577-75, with 38 abstentions. It also approved an amendment 377-293 calling on the commission to withdraw its current proposal and submit a new one. European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Vytenis Andriukaitis told parliament before the vote that the commission would not withdraw its current proposal.
