TTIP Negotiators To Hold Talks On Financial Services In Coming Weeks

United States and European Union negotiators for the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) in the coming weeks will hold talks on financial services at which Washington intends to push for greater access to the EU market and Brussels plans to discuss an exception from services trade rules for prudential financial regulation. Daniel Mullaney, the lead TTIP negotiator for the U.S., said in a telephone press conference from Miami at the close of the 11th round of TTIP negotiations on Oct. 23 that the sides would hold "discussions on financial services market access" in about a week or two. Immediately following his comment, EU chief TTIP negotiator Ignacio Garcia Bercero said that this meeting would take place via digital video conference (DVC) and that this would focus on the so-called "prudential carveout" for financial regulation that is a feature of the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) and has been included in some way in U.S. and EU free trade deals.
