A new lightweight mateial can withstand ultrahigh temperatures on hypersonic vehicles,such as the space shuttle.Ultrahigh-temperature ceramics (UHTCs),created in Sandia National Laboratory's Advanced Materials Laboratory,can withstand up to 2,000 deg C (3,800 deg F).
