Movement toward new petrochem, oil plants

Sansol Polymers, South Africa's leading producer of ethylene and related chemicals, approached Kerala State Industrial Development Corp. (KSIDC) for permission to make a prefeasibility study to build a petrochemicals complex in the Kasargod district of India. "Our interest is earnest, and we are satisfied with the looks of the proposal," said Sansol group general manager Johan Van Buren-Schele. "But we have to make a detailed study of the feasibility from every angle, and this might take something like 18 months to complete." A delegation from Sansol, together with senior officials of South African High Commission in India, visited the proposed site at Cheemeni in the Kasargod district and held discussions with the managing director of the KSIDC, Jiji Thomson. The delegation also met the Industries Minister, Suseela Gopalan.
