Integration Standards Forge Common Path

Whether you're making ball bearings or beer, you need to exchange information, either across companies or within your own company. A couple of standards in the process and discrete industries could help: the Open Application Group interface specification (OAGIS, www.openapplica tions.org, and the ISA-95 enterprise control integration series of standards (www.isa.org/ms/sp95EnterpriseControlIntegration Committee). In the past, the two standards have stood alone, using different terminology for different types of processes. Now, the two organizations are establishing an agreement where both standards will use common language and terminology to forge a common path to the end product. Open Applications Group and ISA-SP95 in December said they will collaborate on the project. ISA-SP95 is already planning to include aspects of the OAGIS standard in its soon-to-be-published Part 5 of the ANSI/ISA-95 business to manufacturing transactions standard.
