Financial provisioning for mine closure: developing a policy and regulatory framework in the transition economies

The purpose of this article is to describe the rationale for implementing a programme to secure mine closure funding in transition economies during the operational and profitable phase of mining projects and to reduce the expectation or reliance on governments and donors to address this issue. The need for a technical assistance programme to be provided to participating countries to assist them in developing the relevant policy and regulatory framework is also outlined.
