Urban transportation in Latin America and the Caribbean: the example of Cuenca, Ecuador

Providing urban transportation services that are financially, socially and environmentally sustainable is critical in Latin America and the Caribbean, where 75 percent of the population lives in urban areas. An efficient, cost-effective public transportation system, combined with effective land-use management, has been developed in Curitiba, Brazil. The Inter-American Development Bank supports efforts to adapt Curitiba's integrated approach to other medium and large cities in the region. In Cuenca, Ecuador, technical assistance has stimulated a multitude of changes in municipal transportation services.
