摘要

The 2000 Olympics in Sydney demonstrated a growing trend towards making major public and sporting events more environmentally friendly. The Games in Australia this summer were the first to include a comprehensive environmental plan as part of a city's successful bid to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The Sydney organizers followed through by making the Athletes' Village the world's largest solar-powered suburb. What had been a degraded area was transformed into Sydney Olympic Park, a sporting, residential, business, recreation and conservation district. Efforts to protect the natural habitat included replanting of native grass and tree species. In recognition of its efforts to protect the environment during the development of its Olympic facilities, the Sydney Olympic Co-ordination Authority won the Banksia Award's 2000 gold prize. The award cited the protection of two endangered species, the Green and Golden Bell frogs. Organizers worked with herpetologists from the Australian Museum to restore and protect frog habitat, as well as to clean up and restore wetlands and creek areas.
