In the future, foods are likely to be highly enriched with algae and various other algae compounds. Researchers have been trying to develop various algae production systems. Algae grow in open, closed or semi-closed systems in different tanks that allow access of sunlight to the entire biomass. Growth occurs generally in the top layer of the growing medium unless proper mixing occurs. Maintaining a stable growth environment also has difficulties. Generally, a natural open pond or artificial raceway pond is used for cultivation. However, due to their depth and the related reduced average light supply, open systems only reach limited productivity rates. In addition, the consumption of pumping energy is relatively high, as high amounts of water with low product concentration have to be processed for further use. Thus, there is a need for the development of a new production system with high productivity and low cost.
