Young Stars in Industrial Biotechnology

Stephen Herrera: I would like to thank all of our panelists for participating today, and in order to devote as much time as possible to our discussion, I will only say thank you to BIO for making the effort to acknowledge what most industries, particularly in the industrial sector, only give lip service to, and that's acknowledging that there is a growing group of young stars out there that are not just starting companies but building companies. And at the risk of sounding like my grandfather, I do hope that they remember as they get older, as their companies mature, what brought them into the field in the first place. It's a hell of a lot more difficult to run a company and build a company then it is to go onto Wall Street, or to take a job within a larger organization. It's thankless, and many times you get to the end of your day and wonder, 'Wait a minute—I didn 't get into this field, this startup to be chasing accounts and herding cats and shuttling on planes. I was going to try and change the world.' Well the truth is, you're changing the world by doing all those things. And I hope that you continue to persevere, and I thank BIO for this opportunity. I think this is a great, new front in BIO's very storied history to acknowledge these young stars. First, I'd like to introduce Reshma Shetty, she is cofounder of Ginkgo Bio-works, followed by Dan Widmaier, he is CEO and cofounder of Bolt Threads, and Jeffrey Dietrich, Chief Technology Officer and founder of Lygos.
