Another lease of life for St Lawrence fluorspar?

The twice closed St Lawrence fluorspar mine in Newfoundland may be set to have another lease of life yet again, if Burin Minerals Ltd has anything to do with it. A definitive date has been given to the reopening of fluorspar mines in Newfoundland. Burin Minerals Ltd is in the process of completing a feasibility study at fluorspar mines in St Lawrence, Newfoundland, Canada, and the company says it should be in full fluorspar operation by the end of September 1996. The 100,000 tpa capacity operation was run by St Lawrence Fluorspar Ltd, a subsidiary of UK-based Minworth Ltd which rejuvenated the operation in 1987. However, the mines were sold when the companies filed for bankruptcy in 1991 (see IM August '91, p.9).
