The FIA, the governing body of motor-sport, has cleverly attacked the performance of Grand Prix cars with three ingenious new measures for 1998. These should combine to increase overtaking opportunities as well as reduce cornering speeds. At the heart of the matter is the amount of grip generated by the contemporary Formula One car, which is primarily a function of the coefficient of friction of its tyres and the amount of downforce it generates. Braking power also comes firmly into the overtaking equation.
