In May 2004,10 new members will accede to the EU. As Michelle Wyart-Remy Secretary General of MA-Europe outlines, this will open up trade opportunities for industrial minerals, and producers in some accession countries are already preparing to play an active role in shaping EU mining legislation. A MAIOR event takes place on 1 May 2004, when 10 new members loin the European Union (EU). The enlargement from 15 to 25 member states (MS) is certainly one of the biggest developments in EU history. Embracing nine MS in 1973 and 15 in 1995, the EU has created a single market and, more recently, a single European currency (which still has to be adopted by some MS). It has also expanded its economic and social competence to foreign and security policy.
