In molecular biology research, it is often necessary to purify recombinant proteins away from the protein background of the expression host as a first step in an experimental process. Traditional chromatography methods such as size exclusion or ion exchange chromatography often do not adequately separate the recombinant protein from the host cell background. In order to obtain the protein of interest in a reasonably pure form. researchers often need to use a combination of these methods. This not only increases the time and effort put forth by the researcher but also increases the possibility of losing protein. In mammalian cell expression systems, this becomes an even more significant issue because expression levels are relatively low.
