A study of kangra valley tea

Tea cultivation in Himachal Pradesh (H.P.) dates back to 1849 when Dr. Jameron, the Superintendent of Botanical Garden, Peshawar, visited Kangra district and recommended the lower slopes of Dhauladhar range lying between 900 to 1400 m.s.l with an average rainfall of 1520 mm to cultivate tea. The first commercial plantation with chinary type was established as Hailey Nager Tea Estate at Holta in 1852. Tea quality appeared excellent as evidenced by gold and silver medals won in Amsterdam and London market from 1886-95. The great earthquake of 1905 ruined the flourishing industry. The panic stricken Britishers sold their estates to local buyers.
