Effect of planting methods and weed management on transplanted summer rice.

A field experiment was conducted in Jorhat, Assam, India, during the 1999 and 2000 summer seasons to determine the effect of planting methods and weed management on transplanted summer rice cv. Luit. The treatments comprised 3 planting methods, namely closer (10x10 cm), normal (15x15 cm) and farmers' practice (haphazard planting), and 4 weed control practices, namely 1.5 kg butachlor/ha, 0.4 kg anilofos/ha, hand weeding at 25 days after transplanting and weedy. The lowest weed density and dry matter accumulation were recorded in closely-planted rice. Butachlor and anilofos were at par with hand-weeding and recorded significantly lower weed density and dry matter accumulation than the weedy control. Normal planting showed significantly higher yield than the other planting methods in 1999, while closer planting recorded the highest grain yield in 2000. Hand weeding recorded the highest grain yield and was at par with butachlor and anilofos. All the weed control practices were at par and resulted in significantly higher straw yield of rice than the control. The highest panicle number was recorded with normal planting.
