Mammary gland abscessation - mastitis in a Swiss mountain dog- a case report

Mammary gland infections (mastitis) in dogs may be encountered during weaning and caused by an ascending infection from the teat opening. Other potential causes or contributing factors include trauma (from nursing pups) and hematogenous spread. Mastitis in lactating dog is of grave concern as nurshig of puppies becomes a major managemental problem. A Swiss mountain bitch aged 6 yr was presented to the college hospital with a history of inappetance, dullness and hot, painful, swollen left abdominal mammae with yellowish purulent discharge. The bitch had a history of mastitis and the pups had died of fading puppy syndrome in the previous lactation. Physical examination of the animal revealed a rectal temperature of 103.2° F with tachypnoea and tachycardia. Conjunctival mucous membrane was severely congested.
