Serum calcium and inorganic phosphorus levels in anoestrus buffaloes

Minerals play an intermediate role in the action of hormones and enzymes at subcellular levels and may affect reproductive efficiency. It results in ovarian hypofunction as a result of deficiency or inadequate proportion of these minerals, which mightwell be reflected by lower blood levels of these minerals. The present study was undertaken to elucidate the relationship between serum calcium and phosphorus levels and anoestrus in buffaloes. The total 90 buffaloes of 3-9 yr of age maintained on paddystraw, wheat straw and sugarcane tops with occasional access to berseem and showing signs of infertility were identified. Of these, 28 were in anoestrus and not showing signs of heat for a prolonged period and not having corpus luteum when examined perrectally twice at 10 days interval. Thirty-five apparently normal cyclic buffaloes of the same region served as control. Approximately, 10 ml blood was collected from both anoestrus and control buffaloes for serum separation. In anoestrus buffaloes, blood was collected at the day of second rectal examination whereas in normal cyclic buffaloes, blood was collected during estrum.
