Flowering and floral biology studies in low-chill pear cultivars

The low-chill pears grown in the subtropical plains have the problem of low productivity and poor fruit quality, Furthermore, all the available low-chill cultivars are inferior than high-chill cultivars, A well-planned varietal improvement programme is, therefore required for obtaining high yielding, low-chill cultivar with comparable fruit quality to that of high-chill types. For undertaking a breeding programme, it is necessary to have a knowledge of the morphology and floral biology of the cultivars to be used as parents.
