Effect of planting time on flowering of tuberose cv. Double in Andamans

Tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa L.) is a suitable crop for both cut flower as well as loose flower purposes. Availability of flowers locally throughout the year will make them cheaper for the consumers and as well increase the returns per unit area forthe farmers. Studies carried out by workers in the mainland (Sandhu and Bose, 6; Nambisan and Krishnan, 4; Singh and Kumar, 7; Dubey and Shukia, 1) and in other countries have resulted in varying recommendations with regard to planting time. Hence, a need was felt to standardize the planting time for getting higher yields as well as to have a steady supply of flowers in the local markets during the entire year in Andaman islands. This study was undertaken with two main objectives viz., to prolong the flowering of tuberose throughout the year by staggered planting and to standardize the optimum time of planting to achieve maximum yield.
