摘要

Carrot is one of the important vegetables and is cheaper and rich natural source of pro-vitamin A carotenoids. The orange coloured temperate/European carrots contain more carotenoids as compared to tropical/Asiatic types. The consumption of carrot isessential to keep check on the development of an eye disorder Xerophthalmia (caused due to vitamin A deficiency) in developed nations and to eradicate this problem from the developing and under developed countries, Heterosis breeding is helpful in increasing the yield of quality roots. Although F_1 hybrids of carrot are available in Japan, U.S.A. and other countries but unfortunately, no indigenously developed hybrid variety in India except few introduced ones. For success in crop improvement includingexploitation of hybrid vigour, combining ability analysis is one of the effective tools which helps in selection of superior parents and superior hybrids based on their general combining ability (gca) and specific combining ability (sea) estimates respectively. An attempt has, therefore, been made to study the combining ability at the first hand with regard to yield and its contributing characters in temperate carrot under Indian condition.
