Combining ability studies in pea (Pisum sativum)

Garden pea (Pisum sativum L.) is an important leguminous vegetable crop grown in India for its tender pods. At present main emphasis has been given to develop F_1 hybrids in vegetables. Identification of potential parents based on their combining ability is very essential in heterosis breeding so that the resultant F_1 hybrids can express maximum heterosis in the desired direction. Therefore, studies were undertaken to identify parental combination that are likely to produce high-yielding and early-maturing quality pods.
