Courtoisina cyperoides (Roxb.) Sojak (Cyperaceae): A New Distributional Record for Andaman and Nicobar Islands; India

Courtoisina cyperoides (Roxb.) Sojak is reported for the first time from Andaman and Nicobar Islands.During field exploration in Andaman Islands, the authors came across a population of species of Courtoisina behind the Corbyn's cove beach in Port Blair (South Andaman). Critical study with the help of literature and matching with specimens deposited indifferent herbaria, proved that the species involved was Courtoisina cyperoides (Roxb.) Sojak. A thorough scrutiny of the literature (Rao, 1986; Cook, 1996; Lakshminarasimhan and Rao, 1996; Mathew, 1998; Prasad and Singh 2002; Pandey and Diwakar, 2008) revealed that this species has so far not been reported from Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Hence, it is recorded here as new to the Flora of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Detailed description along with the photographs of the plant is presented.
