Xanthomonas sp. produce characteristic extracellular polysaccharides (EPS), which lead to the mucoid appearance of bacterial colonies. Despite its diverse roles in bacterial pathogenesis of plants, little is known about the real implication of this molecule in Xanthomonas pathogenesis. The EPS plays an important role during bacterial infection. It can enhance the susceptibility of host plants by suppressing defence responses such as callose formation or it may mask the bacterium to prevent host recognition and to enable colonization of host tissues 0).
