A study was conducted in Jhansi (India) to examine the effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) inoculation on four multipurpose trees (Acacia nilotica, Albizia procera, Dalbergia sissoo and Leucaena leucocephala). Seeds were separately inoculated with different AM fungi, viz. Acaulospora mellea, A. scrobiculata, Glomus aggregatum, G. arborense, G. cerebriforme, G. diaphanum [Rhizophagus diaphanum], G. etunicatum [Claroideoglomus etunicatum], G. fasciculatum [Rhizophagus fasciculatus], G. hoi, G. intraradices [Rhizophagus intraradices], G. occultum, and an unidentified Glomus 1. After germination, seedlings were observed for shoot length, collar diameter, dry weight, and P concentration. A large number of AM inoculants significantly increased shoot length, collar diameter, shoot and root dry weight, and total dry weight of A. nilotica. Phosphorus percentage was increased by A. scrobiculata, G. hoi and G. occultum, while P uptake per plant was increased by all AM fungi except for Glomus 1. A similar trend was recorded in A. procera for the different growth parameters and P uptake. Growth parameters of D. sissoo showed good response to AM inoculation, and P percent was significantly increased by Glomus 1, G. intraradices, A. scrobiculata, G. cerebriforme, G. occultum, A. mellea, R. diaphanum and C. etunicatum. Except for G. arborense, all AM inoculants increased the P uptake per plant. In L. leucocephala, differences in growth parameters were not significant in various treatments, while P percentage significantly increased by G. diaphanum, G. cerebriforme, A. mellea, G. arborense and G. intraradices. Maximum P uptake was recorded in G. diaphanum, G. cerebriforme and A. mellea. Results suggest that AM fungi can be used to enhance the productivity of A. nilotica, A. procera and D. sissoo in the region.
