Aflatoxin contamination of pear (cultivars Williams and Chinese Sandy) and apple (cultivars Red Delicious and American Apirouge) fruits infected by A. flavus was studied. Among the 20 rot-causing A. flavus isolates recovered from diseased apple fruits, 12 were aflatoxigenic. Fruits of Red Delicious were less susceptible to aflatoxigenic strains (40.0%; aflatoxin B1 production of 312-796 micro g/kg) than the fruits of American Apirouge (80.0%; aflatoxin B1 production of up to 1405 mg/kg). Of the A. flavus isolates obtained from pear fruits, 65% were aflatoxigenic (aflatoxin B1 production of 734-1280 micro g/kg). The pathogenicity of the isolate was not significantly correlated with its aflatoxin production potential.
