Ironically, it took a recent punt in Ferrari's new-to-the-UK F12 to teach me some lessons about our McLaren long-termer's essential usability. When you're still fairly new to a ￡150,000-plus car, it's surprisingly hard to treat it with the abandon it deserves - like an ordinary car, as it were. However, a few days in the hugely quick and imposing Ferrari - getting used to its greater width and rather rougher secondary ride -1 found the ride comfort and manoeuvrability of the Macca quite seductive when I returned to it. Suddenly it seemed a decent option for trips into central London I had previously avoided, although I'll always be a bit chary of narrow streets and high kerbs, given that the special forged wheels cost around ￡1500 a corner.
