But an appearance of still greater interior spaciousness has been achieved in the enlarged bodywork thanks to a novel design concept. Styling that effectively tucks the dashboard into the leading edge of the doors works to deceive the eye and add extra visual width, claims Graham Thorpe, the Englishman credited with inspiring the roomy ambience of the German manufacturer's long-awaited reply to recent increased competition from Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot, Volvo and Alfa Romeo.
