TIGER ISLAND

We make our move at first light, slowly threading our way through the rainforest trees. The trail becomes fainter and harder to follow but, as we draw closer, the distinctive aroma of clove cigarettes hangs in the damp dawn air. Then we spot a line of snares, each one meticulously prepared and primed, lying in wait for the next victim: it could be a wild boar or deer - or, tragically, a Sumatran tiger. Every year, several dozen of these magnificent cats are maimed or killed by snares.
